To reduce ACOS on Amazon without losing sales, cut wasted spend before you cut working campaigns: add negatives weekly, fix your conversion rate (listing + price + reviews), shift budget from broad to exact-match winners, and defend only the keywords that actually drive your rank. Chasing a lower ACOS by pausing proven campaigns is the fastest way to lose both sales and organic rank.
ACOS is ad spend divided by ad revenue. The number everyone should really watch is TACOS — total ACOS including organic sales — because PPC exists to grow the whole business, not just itself. Here are the seven levers we pull, in order, on client accounts.
There is no universal number — the right target depends on your margins and your goal. A profitable steady-state ACOS sits near your pre-tax profit margin. During launches and ranking pushes, a higher ACOS is an investment, and the honest way to measure it is TACOS: total advertising cost of sale across organic and paid revenue together.
Rarely. A spike usually means one of four things: a new competitor, a price change, a bad search term, or seasonality. Pause individual search terms and placements that waste — but keep the campaign structure alive, diagnose the actual cause, and let the data tell you what to switch off. Pausing whole campaigns also pauses the organic rank support your paid velocity creates.
“The cheapest revenue on Amazon is the waste you stop paying for — find it weekly, and ACOS takes care of itself.”

What is the difference between ACOS and TACOS?
ACOS measures ad spend against ad revenue only. TACOS measures ad spend against total revenue including organic — it shows whether advertising is growing the whole business.
How fast can ACOS be reduced?
Meaningful improvements usually show within 2-4 weeks of weekly negative harvesting and bid discipline. Instant drops usually mean sales were paused too.
Does lower ACOS always mean better performance?
No. If cutting ACOS also cuts the organic rank your paid velocity supports, total revenue falls. Always judge ACOS alongside TACOS and rank.
